Training Requirements for Walkie Stackers
Yes, you are right.. workers don’t need a high risk work licence (Forklift – LF) to operate a walkie stacker.
Even if a worker does hold a forklift licence, Employers should be providing a competency-based training and assessment process to ensure workers using the equipment are competent to operate the equipment within the context of the workplace it is being used.
So really, Employers should follow the following steps:
- Examine the Operator Manual provided by the original engineering manufacturer (OEM).
- Identify hazards, risks and safe operating protocols required for your workplace.
- Develop a list of criteria (skills and knowledge) required of the operator.
- Provide the operator with practical training / demonstration of how to use the equipment within the context of your specific workplace.
- Observe the worker undertake the skills, and assess their knowledge of the hazards, risks and safe operating protocols.
- Document the outcomes… this is often referred to as verification of competency (VOC).
- Consider a review or refresher period, especially if workers are not using the equipment regularly.
If you don’t have someone within your workplace with the skills, knowledge and experience to train and assess other workers, consider contacting the equipment supplier or manufacturer for support.
