Is your safety system working for your small business? 6 easy tips to make your system more engaging…

Have you stopped recently to consider if the safety system you are using, is working for your small business?

There are many variables we usually consider in this equation, such as:

  1. Do you hold any current certifications or accreditations?
  2. Is your client driving you to do certain things?
  3. Which legal duties are you addressing with respect to your management system?

But have you considered things like useability, available technology, and the way in which information is presented to your staff?

I want you to think creatively about how you can reinvent your safety management system, to make it work for you and your staff. Here are some cost effective considerations that can make your safety system more engaging:

  1. Supplement long passages of text with diagrams or pictures
  2. Use video clips to demonstrate a safe system of work (i.e. for inductions or training)
  3. Consider the use of QR codes for accessing safety related information
  4. Remove aspects of your system which do not align with your scope of work
  5. Have information translated into relevant languages for culturally diverse workplaces
  6. Integrate safety processes into other digital systems that you may be using (i.e. job management software)

Like all aspects of your business, your safety system requires constant review and maintenance to ensure it is working effectively. Think about these suggestions next time you are reviewing or updating your safety management system to make sure it is working for you!
